Open Question: is this a normal thing for people to do?

Okay here’s the details. I’ve been in love with one of my best friends since the eight grade (two years) now but I realized that I was not getting a second chance with her (went out once as a couple) as she likes this other guy. Is it wrong for me wanting her to be happy by trying to hook her up with the guy she likes, even at the cost of my own happiness (I believe that other people’s feelings come before my own), or I am just being stupid?
